Target Information
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These proteins belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction through G protein activation. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins in this organism is independent of that in other species.
