Target Information
Cytokeratin 19 is part of a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. Cytokeratins range in molecular weight from 40–68 kDa and isoelectric pH between 4.9–7.8.
Human cytokeratins are numbered 1–20 and their expression patterns vary by epithelium type and differentiation stage. These patterns are useful in distinguishing epithelial malignancies.
Cytokeratin antibodies assist in tumor differential diagnosis via immunohistochemistry, and are also valuable in cytopathology and flow cytometry. Cytokeratin 19 is not expressed in hepatocytes, making it useful for identifying liver metastasis.
