Target Information
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger smell perception. These receptors belong to the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure. They are encoded by single coding-exon genes and are responsible for odorant signal recognition and transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific. This particular family member is believed to be a pseudogene.
