Background
This gene encodes a peripheral membrane protein located in a region of chromosome 10q containing a segmental duplication. The full-length gene is in the telomeric duplicated region, while two other proximal copies are partial and may represent pseudogenes. It plays a role in establishing and maintaining cell polarization. The protein is recruited to cell-cell junctions in an E-cadherin-dependent manner and localizes selectively at the basolateral membrane in polarized epithelial cells. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
