Background
The Golgi apparatus participates in glycosylation and transport of proteins and lipids in the secretory pathway and consists of stacked cisternae (flattened membrane sacs). Interactions between the Golgi and microtubules are important for Golgi reorganization after mitotic fragmentation. The GM130 protein, part of the golgin family, is thought to play roles in Golgi cisternae stacking and vesicular transport. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described, though their full-length nature is not yet determined.
