Background
This gene encodes a mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting step in heme (iron-protoporphyrin) biosynthesis. It acts as a housekeeping enzyme, while a separate gene encodes an erythroid-specific form. The mature protein level is regulated by heme concentration: high heme levels down-regulate the enzyme, whereas low heme levels up-regulate it. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 12. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. (RefSeq, Jan 2015)
