Target Information

Tryptase gamma, also known as serine protease 31 or transmembrane tryptase, is an enzyme encoded by the TPSG1 gene in humans. Tryptases belong to the trypsin-like serine protease family (peptidase family S1) and are enzymatically active only as heparin-stabilized tetramers, resistant to all known endogenous proteinase inhibitors. Several tryptase genes are clustered on chromosome 16p13.3, with four functional genes identified: alpha I, beta I, beta II, and gamma I. Each has allelic variants such as alpha II, beta III, and gamma II. Beta tryptases are mainly expressed in mast cells, whereas alpha-tryptases predominate in basophils. The TPSG1 gene differs from other tryptase family members by containing a C-terminal hydrophobic domain that may act as a membrane anchor. Tryptases are implicated in asthma and allergic or inflammatory disorders.
