Target Information
Gap junctions are specialized plasma membrane structures that form transmembrane channels between adjacent cells. Connexins, the structural proteins of gap junctions, vary between tissues and are designated by molecular mass or sequence similarity.
Connexins have four transmembrane domains, three intracellular, and two extracellular regions. Expression of connexins is tissue-specific and developmentally regulated. Connexin 45 plays a role in cell communication and developmental processes such as embryo implantation.
