Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and contribute to protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins composing the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence-based recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein with no bacterial homolog. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
