Target Information
This gene encodes a sodium/bile acid cotransporter that mediates the uptake of intestinal bile acids by apical cells in the distal ileum. It plays a key role in cholesterol homeostasis as bile acids are the catabolic products of cholesterol metabolism.
Mutations in this gene cause primary bile acid malabsorption (PBAM) and may also be associated with liver and intestinal disorders such as familial hypertriglyceridemia (FHTG).
