Target Information
This gene encodes a secreted, homodimeric glycoprotein expressed in various tissues and may have autocrine or paracrine functions. It contains a 5′ UTR rich in CAG trinucleotide repeats and 11 conserved cysteine residues. The protein is phosphorylated by protein kinase C on serine residues and may regulate renal and intestinal calcium/phosphate transport, cell metabolism, or calcium/phosphate homeostasis. Overexpression of human stanniocalcin 1 in mice leads to high serum phosphate levels, dwarfism, and increased metabolic rate. Altered expression has been observed in hepatocellular, ovarian, and breast cancers.
