Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, which in prokaryotic ribosomes is thought to organize the 3′ domain of 16S rRNA near the P- and A-sites. Pseudogenes for this gene are located on chromosomes 8p and 12p.
