GDF11은 BMP(Bone Morphogenetic Protein) 계열 및 TGF-beta 초가족에 속하는 단백질로, 폴리베이직 프로테올리틱 절단 부위를 가지며 성숙 단백질은 7개의 보존된 시스테인 잔기를 포함합니다. 이 단백질 계열은 배아 및 성체 조직에서 세포 성장과 분화를 조절하는 역할을 합니다. 생쥐 및 Xenopus 연구에서 GDF11이 배아 발달 중 중배엽 형성과 신경발생에 관여함이 시사되었습니다.
