Target Information

ATRX encodes a protein containing an ATPase/helicase domain, belonging to the SWI/SNF family of chromatin remodeling proteins. Mutations in this gene are associated with X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) syndrome, often accompanied by alpha-thalassemia (ATRX) syndrome. These mutations can alter DNA methylation patterns, linking chromatin remodeling, DNA methylation, and gene expression in development. ATRX undergoes cell cycle-dependent phosphorylation, affecting its association with the nuclear matrix and chromatin, suggesting a role in gene regulation and chromosomal segregation during mitosis. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.
