Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the subtilisin-like proprotein convertase family. These enzymes process latent precursor proteins into biologically active forms. This encoded protein acts as a type I proinsulin-processing enzyme and plays a crucial role in insulin biosynthesis. It also cleaves proopiomelanocortin, prorenin, proenkephalin, prodynorphin, prosomatostatin, and progastrin. Mutations in this gene are associated with obesity and carcinoid tumors. Alternate polyadenylation sites and multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been reported.
