Target Information
Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), members of the Herpesviridae family, are ubiquitous human pathogens. Also known as Human herpes virus 1 and 2 (HHV-1 and -2), HSV-1 typically causes cold sores, while HSV-2 is responsible for most genital herpes cases. Transmission occurs when an infected individual sheds the virus. HSV virions consist of a large double-stranded linear DNA genome enclosed within a capsid and surrounded by a viral envelope. HSV strains contain over 70 open reading frames (ORFs) and have been associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
