Target Information
The inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family of proteins regulates programmed cell death triggered by various stimuli. All IAPs have at least one baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) motif essential for anti-apoptotic activity. A serine protease named Omi/HtrA2 is released from mitochondria upon apoptotic induction and binds to IAP. Similar to Smac/DIABLO, mature Omi contains a conserved IAP-binding motif (AVPS) at its N terminus. Deregulated cytoplasmic expression of Omi induces apoptosis, suggesting its participation in the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.
