이 유전자의 돌연변이는 SDH 결함성 유아 백질뇌병증(미토콘드리아 복합체 II 결핍증)과 관련이 있습니다. SDHAF2와 달리 SDHAF1은 종양 억제 단백질로 간주되지 않습니다.
