Target Information

Progesterone is the major progestational steroid, secreted primarily by the corpus luteum and the placenta. It binds to the progesterone receptor, causing dissociation of heat shock proteins, receptor phosphorylation, and transcription activation through direct or indirect interaction with transcription factors. Progesterone acts on the uterus, mammary glands, and brain, being essential for embryo implantation, pregnancy maintenance, and mammary tissue development for milk production. It also serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of gonadal steroid hormones and adrenal corticosteroids. Therapeutic progesterone, a synthetic form of the endogenous hormone, reduces estrogen activity by decreasing receptor numbers and increasing metabolism to inactive metabolites.
