Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the serpin superfamily and the ovalbumin-serpin subfamily. It was first identified as a placental thrombin inhibitor. The mouse homolog is expressed in inner ear hair cells, and mutations in this gene are linked to nonsyndromic progressive hearing loss. This serpin likely protects inner ear cells from lysosomal leakage during stress; loss of this function leads to cell death and sensorineural hearing loss. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been reported.
