Target Information
Chromosome 8, composed of nearly 146 million bases, encodes about 800 genes. Translocation of portions of chromosome 8 with amplifications of the c-Myc gene are associated with certain leukemias and lymphomas and typically indicate poor prognosis. Portions of chromosome 8 have been linked to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Trisomy 8 (Warkany syndrome 2) often results in early miscarriage but may appear in mosaic form in surviving patients, causing developmental and facial abnormalities. The WRN gene on chromosome 8 encodes a DNA helicase defective in Werner syndrome (premature aging). Chromosome 8 is also linked to Pfeiffer syndrome, congenital hypothyroidism, and Waardenburg syndrome. The C8orf12 gene product has been provisionally designated C8orf12 pending further characterization.
