Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. The protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and has both 17α-hydroxylase and 17,20-lyase activities. It is a key enzyme in the steroidogenic pathway producing progestins, mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens. Mutations are associated with steroid-17α-hydroxylase deficiency, pseudohermaphroditism, and adrenal hyperplasia.
