Target Information
Ribonucleases (RNAses) H are enzymes that hydrolyze the RNA strands of RNA/DNA hybrids. Their major role is to remove the RNA strand from RNA/DNA hybrids formed during DNA replication and repair. RNAse H2 consists of three subunits, all required for RNAse activity. Mutations in RNAse H2A or other subunits are linked to Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome (AGS), a neurological disorder with symptoms similar to viral brain infections, including elevated IFN-alpha levels in cerebrospinal fluid. Similar conditions occur with TREX1 mutations, suggesting that RNAse H2 and TREX1 share functional roles in preventing accumulation of intracellular nucleic acids that trigger inflammatory responses via innate immune activation.
