Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA.
The MRPS31 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that may play a role in translation initiation and has been associated with type 1 diabetes, though its exact involvement remains unclear. Pseudogenes for MRPS31 are found on chromosomes 3 and 13.
