Angiotensin II는 강력한 혈관 수축 호르몬으로, 알도스테론 분비의 주요 조절자입니다. 이 수용체는 심혈관계에서 혈압과 체액량 조절에 중요한 역할을 하며, 최소 두 가지 유형의 수용체를 통해 작용합니다. AGTR1 유전자는 angiotensin II의 주요 심혈관 효과를 매개하는 type 1 receptor를 암호화합니다. 또한 허혈성 또는 경색성 심근으로의 혈류 회복 시 발생하는 재관류 부정맥 생성에도 관여할 수 있습니다. 이전에는 관련 유전자 AGTR1B가 존재한다고 여겨졌으나, 현재 인간에서는 단일 type 1 receptor 유전자만 존재하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 이 유전자는 여러 가지 대체 스플라이싱 전사 변이를 가질 수 있습니다.
