Target Information

Eukaryotes produce three distinct classes of RNA polymerase: Pol I, II, and III.

  • Pol I transcribes rRNA genes for 28S, 18S, and 5.8S ribosomal RNA precursors.
  • Pol II transcribes protein-encoding genes into mRNA and snRNA genes into snRNAs.
  • Pol III transcribes 5S rRNA and all tRNA genes.

Each RNA polymerase complex consists of 9–15 different subunits. The RPB6 and RPB8 subunits are common to all three RNA polymerases.
