Specificity Comments:
FAP (fibroblast activation protein) is a cell surface glycoprotein and serine protease expressed mainly in fetal mesenchymal tissues and epithelial cancer fibroblasts.
In cancer, FAP promotes cellular proliferation; during embryonic development, it remodels developing tissues.
FAP acts as an integral membrane gelatinase composed of N-glycosylated, proteolytically inactive subunits.
FAP expression on chondrocyte membranes is upregulated by IL-1 and OSM, increasing in osteoarthritic patients.
This expression is colocalized with MMP-1, MMP-13, and CD44 variants (v3, v7/8).
Mice lacking FAP gene copies are fertile and show no developmental defects or changes in cancer susceptibility.
Target Information
The gene encodes a homodimeric integral membrane gelatinase belonging to the serine protease family.
It is selectively expressed in reactive stromal fibroblasts of epithelial cancers, granulation tissue of healing wounds, and malignant cells of bone and soft tissue sarcomas.
This protein is involved in controlling fibroblast growth and epithelial–mesenchymal interactions during development, tissue repair, and epithelial carcinogenesis.
