Target Information
OPA1 is a dynamin-related GTPase essential for maintaining mitochondrial morphology and mtDNA integrity. Mutations in OPA1 are associated with heterozygous optic atrophy, a dominant trait leading to reduced visual clarity and potential blindness. The disease typically manifests in childhood and worsens with age due to optic nerve fiber degeneration.
Additionally, OPA1 dysfunction has been linked to certain schizophrenia characteristics through mitochondrial network disruptions affecting neuronal apoptosis and metabolism.
