Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. They lack a 5S rRNA, and their protein sequences vary significantly among species, complicating recognition by sequence homology. The MRPL45 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with pseudogenes found on chromosomes 2p and 17q.
