Target Information
RELM alpha, also known as Resistin-like alpha or FIZZ1, is a small cytokine (88 amino acids, MW 9.4 kDa) produced mainly by macrophages. It is highly expressed in small peritoneal, alveolar, and adipose tissue macrophages and is strongly induced by IL-4 and IL-13. Along with Arginase 1 and Ym-1, RELM alpha serves as a hallmark of M2 macrophage polarization. Elevated levels may indicate parasitic infection. Humans lack the RELM alpha gene, but human Resistin shows similarity in sequence, tissue distribution, and function. Other RELM family members in mice include RELM beta, RELM gamma, and Resistin, each with distinct tissue distribution and functions. RELM alpha is involved in parasite infection, mucosal inflammation, and allergic responses.
