Target Information
CD31 (platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1, PECAM-1) is an inhibitory coreceptor involved in regulation of T cell and B cell signaling through immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motifs (ITIMs). Upon phosphorylation, these motifs provide docking sites for protein-tyrosine phosphatases.
CD31 is expressed ubiquitously within the vascular compartment, primarily at junctions between adjacent cells. The N-terminal Ig-like domain mediates homophilic binding, crucial for cell-cell interactions.
CD31 plays diverse roles in:
- Modulation of integrin-mediated cell adhesion
- Transendothelial migration and angiogenesis
- Apoptosis and immune regulation
- Autoimmunity, macrophage phagocytosis, IgE-mediated anaphylaxis, and thrombosis
It is a key regulatory molecule in the vascular system.
