SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, is a virus that causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The Spike (S) protein plays key roles in viral attachment, fusion, and entry, serving as a major target for antibody, inhibitor, and vaccine development.
The receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) of the Spike protein binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors, exhibiting higher affinity to ACE2 than the SARS-CoV RBD.
The S1 subunit contains the RBD that specifically binds to ACE2 receptors on target cells.
