Target Information
ADAMs (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain) are membrane-anchored proteins expressed in various tissues, involved in proteolysis, adhesion, fusion, and intracellular signaling.
ADAM23 is specifically expressed in fetal and adult brain and may act as an integrin ligand in neural cells. It promotes adhesion of neuroblastoma and astrocytoma cells via interaction with αvβ3 integrin.
Unlike other metalloproteinases, ADAM23 lacks the typical catalytic residues, suggesting it primarily functions in cell adhesion rather than protease activity. Evidence also indicates ADAM23 may act as a tumor suppressor gene.
