Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the candidate taste receptor family belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. These receptors are specifically expressed in taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia. Each intronless gene encodes a 7-transmembrane receptor protein functioning as a bitter taste receptor. TAS2R16 is clustered with other taste receptor genes on chromosome 7 and linked to loci influencing bitter perception. It acts as a gustducin-coupled receptor involved in bitter compound recognition in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract, signaling through PLCB2 and TRPM5 channels. Expression occurs in gustducin-positive taste receptor cells of the tongue. The Lys-172 polymorphism in TAS2R16 is associated with genetic susceptibility to alcoholism and bitter perception of salicin.
