Target Information
ME2 (Malic Enzyme 2) encodes a mitochondrial NAD-dependent malic enzyme, a homotetrameric protein catalyzing the oxidative decarboxylation of malate to pyruvate.
It was previously weakly linked to Friedreich ataxia, which is now known to result from mutations in a different gene. Certain SNP haplotypes of ME2 have been associated with increased risk for idiopathic generalized epilepsy.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
