Target Information
This gene encodes a secreted, homodimeric glycoprotein expressed in a wide variety of tissues, potentially functioning in autocrine or paracrine signaling. It contains a 5′ UTR rich in CAG trinucleotide repeats and encodes a protein with 11 conserved cysteine residues, phosphorylated by protein kinase C on serine residues. The protein may regulate renal and intestinal calcium/phosphate transport, cell metabolism, and calcium/phosphate homeostasis. Overexpression of human stanniocalcin 1 (STC1) in mice results in high serum phosphate levels, dwarfism, and increased metabolic rate. Altered expression has been observed in hepatocellular, ovarian, and breast cancers.
