Target Information
This gene encodes a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor belonging to a superfamily of ligand-gated ion channels involved in fast synaptic signal transmission. These pentameric receptors bind acetylcholine, causing conformational changes that open ion channels across the plasma membrane. The CHRNA4 protein forms functional receptors with nAChR beta-2 or beta-4 subunits. Mutations in this gene are associated with nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy type 1, and certain polymorphisms may confer protection against nicotine addiction.
