Target Information
Connexin 40 (Cx40) belongs to the connexin family of gap junction proteins, expressed in pancreas, kidney, skeletal muscle, liver, placenta, and heart. It is highly expressed in vascular endothelial cells and the mammalian heart, specifically in the atrial myocardium and His-Purkinje conduction system. Other connexins expressed in the heart include:
- Cx37: Endocardium
- Cx43: Atrial and ventricular myocardium, distal conduction system
- Cx45: Throughout the heart
Cx40 and Cx43 frequently co-localize in cardiovascular cells and form heterotypic gap junction channels.
