Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins serving numerous functions in excitable and non-excitable cells.
The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K⁺) is unique in that its activation is controlled by both intracellular calcium increase and membrane depolarization.
Maxi K⁺ channels consist of an alpha homotetramer containing a voltage sensor and an intracellular calcium binding domain.
In vascular smooth muscle, an auxiliary beta-subunit is present in a 1:1 ratio, reducing the calcium concentration required to keep the pore open by 5–10 fold.
