Histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4)는 핵심 히스톤(H2A, H2B, H3, H4)의 N-말단 라이신 잔기를 탈아세틸화하는 효소로, 전사 조절, 세포 주기 진행, 발달 과정 등에서 중요한 역할을 합니다. HDAC4는 다중 단백질 복합체를 형성하여 작용하며, 근육 성숙 과정에서 MEF2A, MEF2C, MEF2D와 상호작용합니다. 또한 MTA1-매개 ESR1 발현의 후성유전적 조절에도 관여하며, HDAC4 유전자의 돌연변이는 Brachydactyly-mental retardation syndrome (BDMR)과 관련이 있습니다.
