Target Information
SERT (Serotonin Transporter) is an integral membrane protein responsible for transporting serotonin from synaptic spaces into presynaptic neurons. It terminates serotonin action and recycles it in a sodium-dependent manner. This protein is targeted by psychomotor stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine and belongs to the sodium:neurotransmitter symporter family.
A polymorphism in the promoter region of this gene can influence serotonin uptake rates and may be associated with sudden infant death syndrome, aggressive behavior in Alzheimer’s disease, and depression susceptibility in individuals exposed to emotional trauma.
