Target Information
Chromosome 13 comprises nearly 4% of human DNA, containing around 114 million base pairs and approximately 400 genes. Key tumor suppressor genes on this chromosome include BRCA2 and RB1 (retinoblastoma). RB1 encodes a critical tumor suppressor protein; defects can lead to malignant retinal growth and other cancers. The SLITRK1 gene associated with Tourette syndrome is also located on chromosome 13. Polysomy or trisomy of chromosome 13 (Patau syndrome) is typically deleterious, often resulting in severe developmental defects and high mortality.
