Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is multifunctional and part of the major cellular poly(rC)-binding proteins along with PCBP-1 and hnRNPK. It contains three K-homologous (KH) domains involved in RNA binding. Together with PCBP-1, it functions as a translational coactivator of poliovirus RNA and promotes viral RNA replication by binding to the 5′-terminal cloverleaf structure. It also plays roles in translational control of 15-lipoxygenase mRNA, human papillomavirus type 16 L2 mRNA, and hepatitis A virus RNA. Additionally, it contributes to alpha-globin mRNA stability via formation of a sequence-specific mRNP complex. PCBP2 and PCBP1 are paralogs, with related genes PCBP3 and PCBP4 arising from gene duplication events. Two processed pseudogenes (PCBP2P1 and PCBP2P2) are also known. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
