Target Information

FOXC1 is a protein belonging to the forkhead family of transcription factors characterized by a distinct DNA-binding forkhead domain. Although the specific function is not fully known, FOXC1 plays a regulatory role in the FGF19-FGFR4-MAPK pathway, contributing to the development and maintenance of anterior segment structures within the eye.

Mutations in this gene are associated with various ocular developmental disorders such as glaucoma, iridogoniodysgenesis anomaly, Peters anomaly (including central corneal leukoma, absence of posterior corneal stroma and Descemet membrane), and Axenfeld-Rieger anomaly (characterized by posterior corneal embryotoxon, iris adhesion to Schwalbe line, hypertelorism, hypoplasia of malar bones, congenital absence of some teeth, and mental retardation).
