NEU1은 리소좀 효소로, 당단백질 및 당지질과 같은 기질에서 말단 시알산 잔기를 절단합니다. 리소좀 내에서 이 효소는 베타-갈락토시다아제 및 카텝신 A와 함께 헤테로삼합체 복합체를 형성합니다. NEU1 유전자의 돌연변이는 시알리도시스(sialidosis)를 유발할 수 있습니다.
이 단백질은 보호 단백질(protective protein)로도 알려진 카텝신 A와 함께 작용합니다.
