Target Information
UCP4 is a 323 amino acid mitochondrial uncoupling protein belonging to the large mitochondrial substrate carrier family with three Solcar repeats. It acts as a mitochondrial transport carrier facilitating the transfer of anions and protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane. UCP4 reduces mitochondrial membrane potential and contributes to thermoregulatory heat production by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis. It is predominantly expressed in adult and fetal brain, with lower levels in spinal cord, corpus callosum, and substantia nigra.
