Cystatin C는 type 2 cystatin superfamily에 속하는 단백질로, 내인성(lysosomal cathepsins) 및 병원성 cysteine proteinase의 강력한 억제제입니다. 13 kDa의 분비 단백질로 생체액에 고농도로 존재하며 모든 인간 핵세포에서 발현되는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. Cystatin C의 변화는 동맥경화증, 아밀로이드 혈관병증, 심근경색 등 다양한 심혈관 질환에서 보고되었습니다. 또한 낮은 분자량 특성으로 인해 신부전의 바이오마커로 사용될 수 있습니다.
