AFG3L2 is a mitochondrial protein closely related to paraplegin. The paraplegin gene is responsible for an autosomal recessive form of hereditary spastic paraplegia. AFG3L2 is considered a candidate gene for other hereditary spastic paraplegias or neurodegenerative disorders.
