Target Information
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These proteins belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, and they mediate the recognition and transduction of odorant signals via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins in this organism is independent from that of other species.
