Target Information
Defensins (alpha and beta) are cationic peptides with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity that form an important part of the innate immune system.
Alpha-defensins differ from beta-defensins by their disulfide bond pairing.
Six human beta-defensins have been identified: BD-1, BD-2, BD-3, BD-4, BD-5, and BD-6.
Beta-defensins are expressed on some leukocytes and epithelial surfaces.
Besides antimicrobial activity, they act as chemoattractants for immature dendritic cells and memory T cells.
Beta-defensins are released from precursors by proteolytic cleavage of a signal sequence and sometimes a propeptide sequence, containing a six-cysteine motif forming three intra-molecular disulfide bonds.
